This ancient heiau, steps from the studio, was built in the late 1890’s by a chief named Kihe appointed by Kaumauli’i, then independent leader of Kaua’i.
He was made land manager and chief of the Kalihiwai region. Kihe embraced the bay and built the heiau as a place of worship and refuge along with a canoe to patrol the bay in front and view the island from the sea. It is said he was laid in his canoe and buried beneath the structure. A Mano akua hovers above.
